Christopher Newport University, or CNU, for short, is a liberal arts university located in Newport News, which is an independent city in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area of the US state of Virginia, with a population estimated at a number of more than 193 000 inhabitants, during the 2009 census.
CNU was established in 1960 and first started as a two-year school of the College of William and Mary, becoming a 4-year college, in 1971, and reaching university status in 1992.
The university presently offers its students `more than 80 areas of study, from biology to business administration and political science to the performing arts`, offering them `a broad choice of paths`, for their `educational journey`.
CNU's athletic teams are nicknamed the Captains and they compete in NCAA Division III, USA South Athletic Conference. Their distinctive colors are royal blue and silver and their mascot is `Captain Chris`.
